Our very first Ink & Gather workshop took place on Saturday 6 August 2016 thanks to the immeasurably talented husband and wife team, Grant and Lynn, who created Makers
and invited me to be a part of it. We all gathered at the Prestwich Collection
headquarters at Mason’s Press and spent four and a half hours creating beautiful drawings together. The only teaching experience I have had was in fourth year of art school helping the third years create fashion animations for the fashion students so I had absolutely no idea what to expect. Being able to share my knowledge of ink drawing, the process that I have developed and talking fellow creatives through drawing with the right side of their brains was immensely rewarding. We had the most incredible group of people ranging from absolute beginners to some seriously talented folks.
My favourite part of being a South African artist is the support of the local creative community. We meet each other at markets, exhibitions or sometimes just through good old Instagram. Most of the creatives that I meet are women, which make it even more special. I am so proud of the fiercely talented women in South Africa that have forged their own career paths in the international art industry. It is certainly not always an easy path but through hard work and perseverance it can be a beautifully rewarding career.
